On the eve of the second National Ecology Day, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, replied to a letter from environmental protection volunteers in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area of Shiyan, Hubei Province, offering warm encouragement and extending sincere greetings to ecological and environmental protection workers and volunteers nationwide.
In his reply, Xi Jinping said that he was pleased to learn that an increasing number of people in the reservoir area have joined the volunteer service team over the past decade, dedicating their hearts and efforts to protecting the clear waters. The water in the reservoir is clearer, the mountains greener, and the environment more beautiful.
Xi Jinping stressed that the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is crucial to the country's strategic goals, long-term development, and the well-being of the people. Protecting the ecological environment of the water source area and ensuring the continuous flow of clear water northward requires the concerted efforts of everyone over the long term. He expressed hope that they would continue to uphold the spirit of volunteer service, encouraging more people to consciously protect and conserve water, working together to create a beautiful China with evergreen mountains, flowing green waters, and fresh air, and contributing to the advancement of a modern civilization that promotes harmony between humanity and nature.
In 2014, the first phase of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project officially commenced. Following this, General Secretary Xi Jinping issued important instructions. Over the past decade, as a crucial water source for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the Danjiangkou Reservoir area has continuously strengthened water quality protection. Broad masses of cadres and the people, including volunteers, have actively participated in water governance and protection efforts, resulting in the stable maintenance of Danjiangkou Reservoir water quality at Class II and above. Recently, environmental protection volunteers from the Danjiangkou Reservoir area in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, wrote to General Secretary Xi, reporting on their volunteer service in protecting the water and expressing their firm determination to heed General Secretary Xi's instructions and safeguard the clear waters of the reservoir.
